My iMac has become very slow, sluggish. It seems like it has a hard time "thinking" when running multiple programs. This was not the case when until recently. What coud be the cause for this poor performance? Is there a way to increase performance without adding RAM? Like a program that would go in and clean-up all of the junk?

Running to many App's, Widget's and background process on a minimal amount of RAM.

Run less App's at the same time.
Ram is cheap and easy to install, if you want better performance while running lots of App's then upgrade the RAM.

In addition to what Dennis has suggested, since you say this wasn't the case until recently, you might want to be sure the drive is OK. It's probably not, but this might be a symptom of a failing drive. Get the free demo of SMART Utility.
