G5 dual 2.7GHz refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!

Hoping that someone might be able to help, as I think I have tried pretty much everything and I’m running out of ideas now!

It’s a G5 dual 2.7GHz that refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!

  • everything passes the extended apple hardware test (2.5)
  • 3GB of RAM (2x1GB brand new from crucial)
  • won’t start from a original OS 10.58 disk
  • passes disk utility when connected to another mac via FW target mode
  • nothing other than keyboard/monitor attached
  • all of this done; http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
  • tried alternative HDD’s without any joy
  • won’t safe boot
  • stays at the grey apple logo screen and the fans then start revving up excessively

Any other suggestions or advice very gratefully received! 😕

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), G5 dual 2.7GHz

Mine did pretty much the same thing a few days ago (I posted a message wondering how you can boot from a CD if the computer wouldn't open the tray).

I tried putting in the original Mac OS X CD to reinstall the software, but the Disk Utility wouldn't allow me to format the drive, saying, "resource is in use", which was weird, because it was from a fresh boot off of the CD.

Anyway, I booted up from my DiskWarrior CD, let it do it's thing, and everything was back to normal. I didn't even have to reinstall the OS. DiskWarrior has saved me time and time again.

So, was it working before the new RAM? If it was, you should at least try things out with the new RAM pulled back out, if you haven't tried that already.

Do you get the progress "gear" at all in the gray screen? You might try a verbose boot by holding down the cmd-V combination until you get (with any luck) the black Unix terminal screen, which should give you a clue of where it is stalling by what was written to the terminal at the stall point.

The new RAM was to replace some old suspect RAM that the extended apple hardware test (v2.5) flagged up.

I sometimes get the progress gear for a short period then it freezes. Last night I left it unplugged and this morning it started up again and so I ran software update to update a few bits and for a while it was OK & then it froze again!

Just tried a verbose boot and all worked OK and it went through to start again. I continued the software update again, and part way on the install cycle, it froze again and the fans start to rise in speed.

I will try another a verbose boot…

OK, it seems to alternate between briefly working/not working, here is a shot of the verbose code if that helps anyone?

Trouble is, it does not seem to stall/give the same errors each time? This one refers to ‘can’t map com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement in preparation for loading’

If I can get it working again BDAqua, I will download the iStat Pro gauges & check the temps…

Seems strange that it's trying to invoke "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement" on a G5, but maybe it's all inclusive???

Though it exists on my Universal 10.5.8 Install, it does NOT appear to be a loaded extension....

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext

BD, is that showing up in your PM's extensions folder? I wouldn't expect to see it loaded in a PM, but I wonder why the installer loads it unless the 10.5 installer loads a system that could boot an Intel, too, when it installs on a PM. (I read somewhere this weekend that an Intel will actually boot from an APM formatted disc as well as a GUID formatted disc) Curious.

I recall seeing yesterday or Saturday on one of the discussion threads someone having that extension show up in a verbose boot on a PM that was having problems booting into Leo. I think I advised trashing the kernel caches and touching Extensions in that one, but it is puzzling that it shows up here as well.

Yes, I have it inmy Extention folder.

Yes, I boot my Intel iMac from APM all the time, as GUID is only needed to Install or do Firmware updates, yet if anything happens to my GUID internal, all is lost since the rest of my Macs can't read GUID disks.
