How do you remove software installations???

Hello.

I am coming from the PC world. How do you UNinstall software on a MAC? There's no uninstall program. How do you make sure that all associated files and 'trash' are removed with the software? Is there a registry to manipulate? I've used Linux, and I don't see a package manager that takes care of the housekeeping. Anyway, you get the idea.

Informaion greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Scott_G

Hello, welcome to the Mac world.

Generally speaking, all you need to do to uninstall a program is drag it to the trash and empty it. If the program is in it's own folder, like Photoshop for example, then you can trash the whole folder and its related files. Some programs may leave behind small settings files that hold your Preferences but they are small and it doesn't hurt to leave them. Preferences and other settings are kept in either the Preferences or Application Support folders - they are located in either the Library folder or youruser/Library folder.

Usually the case is this - if you install a program by manually copying it to the Applications folder, then all you have to do is drag it out to deinstall. If installing requires the use of an installer program, then try running the installer again to see if it offers an uninstall feature.

There is no registry to muddle with - that's a Windows-only "feature".

It is best to use the uninstaller that is included in the installation software to remove applications so related files are removed. Unfortunately, a lot of Mac software does not include an uninstaller.

Spring Cleaning does a good job and has a lot of features, but costs near $50 http://www.allume.com/mac/springcleaning/ . Uninstaller 1.9.8 is highly rated and only costs $19, but I haven't used it, so I can't personally recommend it. There is also some info re FileBuddy at this VersionTracker link, but I have only read about it. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17138

I haven't heard of any shareware or freeware that will do this job, but there is likely something out there.

I tried appzapper the other day and it appeared to do exactly what it says it does.
It removes the application and preferences and other associated files.

P.S. To Scott G: I remember having the same confusion when switching from Windows to Mac OS X last Spring. For months you will keep asking yourself: "What about the Registry?"
