I accidentally erased the Downloads icon from the dock. When I drag the icon from the Applications folder from the Macintosh HD folder on the left of the screen, I end up with a different icon. The different ion has PDF on the bottom of its and a green circle on the top left. How do I restore the right Downloads icon?

Drag from your users folder to the Dock. Right (control) Click and choose view Display As options-->Folder.

Right click (cntl-click) the icon on the dock and change the option to "display as folder".
Right now it's set to display as Stack.
