Error during rendering/encoding

I have been trying to burn a DVD from various movies taken on my 8mm Sony HanyCam. I have tried on 3 different Macs, a 24"iMac, a 27"iMac and a 17" MacBookPro. All are running OS10.6.7 and all versions of software are the same, iMovie 9.0.2 and iDVD 7.1.1.

Once my project in iMovie is complete (about 75 minutes) I choose Share and select iDVD. From within iDVD I choose a theme and fill in all drop zones with photos from within iPhoto. I can preview my DVD before I burn my disc and in preview mode my movie complete with chapter/scene selections all work as expected. In fact the end result looks really great. However when I try to burn a DVD the process appears to be going along as it should for about 45 minutes or so when the DVD is ejected and the following error message appears-

The error message is the same on each Mac - "There was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. The burning process has been canceled."

I have also tried different themes but the result are the same.

All suggestion of how to complete a successful burn would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Gary

Hi Gary,

In iDVD there are 3 encoding settings, as follows: Best Performance, High Quality and Professional Quality.

These can be selected from iDVD's menu - click on Project>Project Info and the Project Info window will appear. If you have the setting as Best Performance, iDVD will allow only a total duration of one hour (including menus) for a standard single layer DVD. As your project is 75 minutes you will need to encode at either the High or Professional Quality setting.

Note that Professional Quality takes about twice as long to encode, as it does a 2 pass operation. Both High and Professional allow a duration of about 2 hours, including menus, for a standard DVD.

Tip: Rather than burning direct from iDVD, choose File>Save as Disk Image when ready to burn. Then you can burn as many DVDs as you like using Disk Utility (come back if you need further advice on this).

HI John, Thanks for your prompt reply. I like the idea of saving my project as a Disc Image and will use this in the future. As my problem was the same on all my Macs I have worked out that the problem was with my chapter markers. I had placed my chapter markers in the middle of the transition between scenes. Once I moved the chapter makers away from the transition and placed them into the actual movie I no longer get the error message and all burns since then have been great.

Many thanks. Regrars Gary

Hi Gary,

I received the following by email from Apple Support Communities (as normally happens with posts I respond to), but I can't seem to get to it, or even see it, in the forum. Strange! So pardon me for duplicating it here, but I wanted to respond.

That was a good pick up Gary! I now recall that problem with placing chapters. There have been other posts about it in the past. Not sure how you came across the solution, but thank you for letting us know - it may help others here. Well done!

PS Now that I've responded, I see your post. Weird! I did refresh my screen and tried several ways to see your post, to no avail. Now it's there!
