Avoid using HTML formatted mail.
Thanks, Beavis, but I'm not familiar with that. I'm using Mac's OS Leopard's mail v3.6. How do I avoid/change from HTML formatted mail?
right-click on the image and select view as icon from the pop-up menu.
in any case, the recipient will see the attachment as an icon.

Observe this only works if you don't have any text inside the message. If you type anything it still won't work.
Same issues with 10.6 and 10.7
