Aperture & iPhoto Libraries Grayed Out in Finder

I have both Aperture and iPhoto installed on my iMac and utilize Apple TV to display my photos. I recently purchased an iPad and wanted to move some of my photos from both iPhoto and Aperture onto my iPad using the wireless remote access application called StreamToMe. It was during this process I discovered I am unable to select either my iPhoto or Aperture libraries in Finder. Though they are both present, they are grayed out and un-selectable. Both my Aperture and iPhoto applications open properly and appear to work fine, But when I encountered this issue with the iPad, I next tried to change the Apple TV library to display photos from the Aperture library versus the iPhoto library where it is now pointed to. I again discovered I was unable to select either library because they appeared grayed out and the iPhoto library currently operating on the Apple TV is not the iPhoto library that opens when I open iPhoto from my iMac. I'm totally confused now and concerned about making any changes for fear of losing (or being unable to select) either one or the other libraries with well over a combined 1+TB of photos. Though all seems fine within each individual application there is a problem attempting to share or move the photo's to another Apple platform device pointing out I may have some deeper library issues than I realized?

Neither the iPhoto Library nor the Aperture Library are available from the Finder like that. What you need to is access the Libraries via the supported methods.

I've not familiar with the app you mention, but if you want to access a Library in either app have a look at the below - it's written for iPhoto but about 95% of it also applies to Aperture

I'd bet the first one is the one you're looking for.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

User uploaded file
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)

You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:

User uploaded file
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps. If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.

If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:

For users of 10.6 and later: You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.

Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.

For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

Other options include:

Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.

File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

Show File: a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected. 3.b.

b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

I have a first generation iPad, and I sync albums to it via iTunes. I am not familiar with StreamToMe other than by its name. Have you installed its companion app ServeToMe? Have you read:

http://projectswithlove.com/streamtome/support_getting_started.html

To clarify use of syncing via iTunes, only one library can be used at a time. Either the iPhoto, or one particular Aperture Library at a time -- the Aperture Library will be the last one you opened with Aperture. The syncing is controlled by the iPod Photo Cache file in the package of each library -- called that regardless of device you target.

Thank you TD, as I've responded to Ernie below, the feedback received has enabled me to get access to my iPhoto library but I still have issues with my Aperture library. I do believe it's a file structure issue as I've gone back and revisited my Apple TV operations. I can see the folders and select the folders of the Aperture library but when I sync, no files load and it indicates 0 photo's. For now I work with my iPhoto library and come back later to see why the Aperture library is so troublesome. Thank you.
