Target Display Mode "Broken" on 2011 iMac

I just purchased a 2011 27" iMac and was planning on using it as a second monitor for my aging MacBook Pro, but it turns out the new iMac will only do Target Display Mode (TDM) with devices outputting through the new Thunderbold port. So, in effect, you can ONLY use your iMac as a second monitor if you have a 2011 MacBook Pro. Please see KB article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775

My question is when is this going to be addressed? Will there be an adapter created that allows us to use DisplayPort/DVI/HDMI in the future? Will there be a software update available that allows the iMac to recognize a DisplayPort input?

This feature was the reason I went for the 27" iMac, it's a great computer, a beautiful display, and TDM allowed me to use it with my work laptop at home.

Please respond to this thread if you think there should be a fix for this current limitation, or know of a workaround.

Thanks,

yep having spent £2000.00 on a top end 2011 imac 27", and to be stuffed for connecting things to it other than other apple devices *****!(according to Apple corporate stasi censorship S U C K S is a swear word ! Grrrr) and dont release a 2012 revision imac that solves these issues and leave us 2011 adopters knackered ! fix this apple, add a feature but dont take away a good one. christ its not rocket science from a spec formulation sense

And if Thunderbolt peripherals dont come down in price the Thunderbolt standard aint going nowhere !

usb3 1tb ext HD by WD on amazon £88.98

compared to

thunderbolt 1tb HD by lacie on apple site £399.00 (you could get an entire computer and drive for that money?)

the usb option for same capacity and speed is four times cheaper ?

and the thunderbolt drive will not be noticeably quicker, because the drive speed and transfer rate is the limiting factor !

Thunderbolt can really only be justified for large raids with conventional disks or ssd raids and usb3 would still have you cheaply covered.

we want standards that are flexible as to what they connect to ! not restrictive and price competetive

my prediction imac 2012 arrives with 2 x thunderbolt all usb3 and extra displayport in. gah apple !

I'm also interested to be converted to the iMac world for home usage and buy an iMac 27".

One of the requirement I have is to be able to use this amazing 27" screen as external monitor with my company laptop (DELL M6500 with DisplayPort output) running windows xp with an NVIDIA quadro fx2800m graphic card.

I bought a DisplayPort - MiniDisplayPort cable and had a try on an iMac 27" (2011 version) from a friend: just because I believe what I see and don't trust any of these sales apple expert you met in an apple store.

Well as most of you I was totally disappointed when I discovered that it doesn't work.

I spent 20 Euros for the cable but will not spend 2000 Euros to buy an iMac 27" with an amazing screen that I can't use for work when working from home...

Unless they fix the problem quickly I stay with my PC Intel Pentium IV with hyper threading and HP 25" monitor and switch box to connect my DELL M6500 ;-)

Hello.

Just to say i tried a dual-link dvi PC output linked to an atlona brand new AT-DP400 adaptor, itself linked with a mini-display port cable to an 2011 27" powered-on imac : Nothing is displayed, the screen remains off.

Tried too connecting the same equipment to a 27" thunderbolt display : The same, and the thunderbolt display don't power on.

Tried to connect a 2011 Mac book air : The thunderbolt display works very well, and all it's back connections are alive and working.

So, it seems that you cannot use any display port to a thunderbolt display or a 2011 iMac. It seems to me that there is more than a simple firmware difference, something in the thunderbolt protocol does not manage the previous displayport protocol as it was before or it has some added protocol needed to poweron the display.

My bottom line is : With 2011+ display or imac, you cannot connect any PC display output... Am i right?

OK, we are hardly loosing a compatibility, with the the feeling of beingcheated bymissingbackwards compatibility. I will manage to equip our company with HP ZR2740w 27Monitors that i tested as capable of 2560 x 1440 resolution from a PC dual-link graphic card or any new or old macbook display port or thunderbolt output. While this display is half the thunderbolt display price, it is a reasonable choice to obtain a convenient versatility, at the price of less integrated cables. And i know it runs now and will run in the future!

Hello, huge apple fan here. I own every single category of apple products. I love imac so much, I think it's their 2nd best product behind macbook air.

Imac 27 equipped w/ SSD (w/ 2 external monitor) is the best productivity machine I have ever owned.

Having said that, this this this.. ARGASDFASDFASDFASDF drives me nuts.

Why Why WHY?

This is really frustrating. And this is most likely not going to get fixed. This *****. Really *****.
