We are getting a screen indicating that there are 71 items that need attention as part of an Apple Security Alert. The screen indicates that it is part of Apple Security Center. It asks to click ok to remove the offending objects (virus, malware). Is this legitimate apple software or will it introduce a virus?

Oh, I know that, but it does cut down on some of them, and it gets rid of a _lot_ of spam.

If you can't close the browser window the normal way, just go into terminal and use "killall Google\ Chrome".

Which website were you trying to access? It happened to me yesterday while trying to go to my Yahoo Inbox (an open tab). For now, I am logging in and out every time I want to check Yahoo mail.
Drakita; try the NoScript extension for Firefox. As the malware is triggered by JavaScript it should prevent you ever seeing it. (I haven't seen it yet)
Safari users can open the preferences, and under the Security tab, remove the check box on "Enable JavaScript".
