Hopefully SOLVED - I had same problem on my iphone. Maybe these couple hidden settings are not quite same on your Ipad?
On the iphone i went Settings>Mail, contacts calanders>choose relevant account (if you have more than 1)> accountname>accountname> scroll down to 'Outgoing Mail server' and click on SMTP >click on your Primary Server >
My #Username and Password were showing 'Optional'. Filled them in with the correct details (email account login) and that fixed problem.

You are getting a mail server error message. Ususally this message indicates that your email message is being sent to the server through a route it doesn't permit. For example, my ISP will only let me send email through its email server which I am connected at home. If I am out of the house I have to use a different outgoing (SMTP) server.
Check your iPhone's SMTP configuration and compare it to the iPad. I bet they are different.

Amber, I was having the same problem. It was driving me nuts. Your solution worked!!! Thanks so much. I can be nuts about other things now.

Thanks, Amber. That worked perfectly. Only problem was that all the messages stacked up in my outbox were sent out immediately, including some that had been there for quite a while. So check the outbox to delete any outdated messages before using Amber's fix.

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! I should have read the message about the stacked up outbox first. My outbox emptied out immediately. I'm sure some people will be very confused when they receive those old e-mails.
