Previews automatically going to desktop

Is there a way to use preview without it also saving the file to my desktop? Its driving me crazy, because everytime I view an attachment from my email it shows up on my desktop. I'm new to Mac's and I'm sure there is a simple solution. Thank you for any input! Lisa
