Log and capture won't play HDV 1080i mini DV

I'm new to FCP, and have minimal computer knowledge, so forgive me if this is an easy question.

I'm trying to import tapes from a Sony HDV 1080i mini DV into FCP. It is connected via firewire. Easy Setup is to HDV - 1080p24. When in Log and Capture, the video and audio does not play. However, it says, "VTR OK" and when pressing play or pause on either the camera or computer, it correlates with the other. (For example, when I press play in Log and Capture, the device begins to play, when I press pause, the device pauses, etc).

The device can be set to HDV, DV, or Auto. I've tried all three and have gotten no results.

I've tried turning everything on and off, reconnecting the device, etc and I'm finally lost.

CHoose HDV 1080i60 in the Easy Setup...try again.

I tried that and nothing changed. And when I go back into Easy Setup it has changed to HDV - 720p60. I change it back to HDV 1080i60 but it continues to change to HDV 720p60.

Time to trash preferences. www.digitalrebellion.com has a free app called PREFERENCE MANAGER. One click and they are gone. Then try again.

If I remember correctly, this can sometimes be a little tricky. You may need to reset a camera menu and you might try having the camera already playing the tape when you launch fcp.

In the camera, make sure it is not set to covert from HDV to SD (somewhere in the camera setting, instead of firewire they use the word i-link)

It is most likely that your camera output settings do not match the Final Cut Pro settings. As long as the two aren't on the same page, they won't talk to each other and you'll be pulling your hair out.

Put the camera in VCR/Play-Edit mode and select the menu. You should be looking for "In/out" menu options. Sometimes the icon for "in/out" is two arrows on top each other, pointing in opposite directions. One of the options will be "i.link conv". Set that to "Off". There is also a setting for "A/V->DV OUT". Make sure that is set to off as well.

Use the easy setup menu in Final Cut Pro to setup the settings to match the format you recorded to on your tape. So if you recorded HDV 1080p24, select the easy setup that matches that. Good luck!

Thank you so much, that last one was extremely helpful. The video is now playing on both the camera and log and capture window. However, now I am having other issues. . .

So I mark the in and out points for a clip to capture, but it tells me that it is unable to find timecode. BUt, if I try to manually capture, it says that there is a faulty connection with the device.

The camera is an HDV 1080i mini DV and I have the Easy Setup at 1080i60.

What computer are you using? How are you connecting the camera to the computer? Where are you capturing to? IF external drive, how is it connected (usb, firewire....)?

According to the FCP manual, you should use the "HDV-Apple ProRes 422 1080p24" easy setup. Let us know if that doesn't help you. It might also be helpful to know exactly what camera you have. You said it was a Sony. Is it an HVR-V1?
