Iphone 4 receiver not working so cannot hear caller

Hi

My iphone receiver has stopped working after two weeks, If I switch to speaker phone I can hear, or if I use a headset.However for normal phone use I cannot hear the caller. Have been through the various trouble shooting steps including restoring the phones. Any ideas or is this a return for service issue.

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.2, 4.3.3 installed

Same thing here. This is the second time my earpiece goes mute without a reason. The first time I was able to get the sound back after two komplete reset/restores, not so this time.

I tried all the tricks with the headphone plug, with no effect. If I play back an audio message (which i use for testing the earpiece) with the volume turned to max, I can hear it veeeeery quiet, almost unhearable, so I guess it is not a hardware malfunction but simply the earpiece muted or set to a very low volume by something.

I hope the upcoming ios-patch will solve this for me. It is so embarassing to have a smartphone without the "phone".

I had the same problem on my iPhone 4. It seemed to happen after it was connected to the bluetooth on my Garmin C540. I tried restoring, resetting settings, the headphone trick discussed above and nothing worked. Finally, I connected it to the Garmin unit again, then turned off bluetooth. It is now working. It really seems like some software bug that leaves the output 'connected' to the wrong device.

Plug the headphones back into it. Then turn on the ipod and play music. Then pause the music and unplug the headphones, and the receiver will work. If you accidentally pull out the headphones while the music is playing it somehow kills the receiver speaker untill you plug it back in pause the music and thern unplug them." -SlimNick (modmyifone.com)

This solution worked for me!!!!!!! 😍 Thanks!!

Having this problem since this morning. I was using the headphones to talk while driving, unplugged them, when to work didn't think anything of it and till now I've been trying to figure out a way to get it working. So far none of the tips stated above have helped out. If anyone else knows of anything that could fix this it would save me a trip to the ISTORE!

The receiver on mine stopped working again. It seemed to happen after a session where I connected my phone to a Bluetooth keyboard. I tried reconnecting to the keyboard, connecting to a bt headset, rebooting, and the headphone tip above with no success. So, I took it to the AppleStore and they gave me a new phone. It still felt like a software issue to me, but who knows.

To all having these problems I have tried numerous items that have been posted. If the air in the port, unplugging headphones don't work go to the following link;

Once you have done it it will take a while to kick in, but mine is now working so I recommend this method if all else fails (as its a pain in the backside doing it this way), but make sure you phone is backed up and download Zootta first and backup your contacts that way (just to be safe).

Good luck

I just recently updated to 5.1.1 and started having this problem! I went into the Apple Store today, and they ran diagnostics on my phone. Told me it was a hardware issue and that I'd need to buy a replacement. For the extra $50, I decided to upgrade to the 4S. Went home, backed up my old phone, updated softawre and restored on the new phone and I'm in the same boat again. Headed back to the apple store tomorrow to return the 4S and go back to my perfectly good 4. Hopefully they'll be able to tell me what's really wrong!!

Had the same issue with iphone4 receiver, and this fixed the problem - Lightly dip a small cotton q-tip in vinegar and gently clean the inside of the earphone jack without pressing it all the way in. ( you may need to take some of the cotton off the q-tip to make it fit, do not force it in there). This should clean any corrosion build up from moisture being trapped in there which disrupts the connections. GoodLuck!
