MacBook Doesn't Chime Upon Startup

Hello everyone.

I have an issue that has really stumped me, and I have no earthly idea how to go about fixing it. My MacBook all of a sudden will not chime upon startup. I have no installed a program to silence it, or anything of the kind. The only recent change that I've made that I know of, is I set up Spaces, which I can't imagine is the problem here. All I know is that now when I hit the power button to boot it up, it no longer chimes. Also yes, my MacBook is not muted either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I hope i am in the right thread- I have the same problem. My 5th day on a 2017 iMac, and just a bunch of issues. Going along with this thread however - There is no Boot bong. i did the terminal thing and i still have no Bong!
Along with the keyboard being freaky and the mouse not clicking right.... this is frustrating to get a new Mac ( my 21st) and it is worse than my 09 Mac Pro and my 15 MacBook Pro. sad face!

I thought i added this from another thread i found.

Disabling the Mac Boot Chime Sound

Launch Terminal, found in /Applications/Utilities/, then enter the following command to disable the boot chime:

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80

Enter the admin password when requested, which is required by usage of the sudo command. On your next reboot the Mac will be completely silent. Adjusting the parameter at the end of that command lets you change the total volume of that boot chime, but it appears to favor ascii characters.

Note that some Macs may require slightly different syntax to disable the boot sound, another variation that works on some modern Macs is as follows:

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01

Rebooting the Mac after executing the command will demonstrate the newly silent boot process.

Re-Enabling the Mac Boot Chime Sound

To return to the default setting and get the boot sound back, you can remove the variable with the -d flag. Back in the Terminal, the command would be like so:

sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume

I have this problem, too. Brand new, late 2016 MacBook Pro with TouchBar. Plays sound from iTunes. Volume adjustment 'blips' work, as do all system sound effects (Mail 'whoosh' etc.)

But no startup chime — complete silence.

I have rest NVRAM and SMC multiple times.

I have deleted all Bluetooth devices and reset the Bluetooth module from the debug menu.

Still no startup chime.

F***ing annoying that Apple stuff has become so bug-prone and glitch-ridden.

Gone are the days of Apple stuff "just working", I guess.

Since you are new to the forums, welcome, and also please do not bump a thread that has not been responded to for 5 years, if you need help, start a new thread. This was also the wrong forum to post this in. You need to post it in the MacBook Pro section of the Apple Support Fourms. Sorry if that sounds rude, but we just need to make sure that people know.

But I know your issue, the MacBook Pro (2016) doesn't come out of the factory with the chime enabled. There is a command line that you have to put in to make the chime startup again. Open Terminal, which is either in your application folder on the dock or in the launchpad under the other folder. Once Terminal is opened up, then enter the following command.

sudo nvram BootAudio=%01

If you need to enter a password, do so. Then restart your Mac and it should work.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Er. Yes, it does. Mine chimed on startup just fine for the past three or four days — then it just stopped. Hence my post.

Nevertheless, I tried the Terminal command you suggested. No change evident.

I will put it down to just one of those glitches that Apple packages into its products these days, and hope some future software or firmware update will address it (there are no other symptoms as yet).

Thanks,

DT.
