G4 Powerbook wifi issue

My G4 Powerbook wifi reception is extremely low. Replaced airport card and still the same. Any ideas? Could a bad earth of some description cause interference? Have tried different wifi sources and even within 1 meter range goes from full bars to 1 bar and everything in between.

None of the G4 Powerbooks was known for good WiFi reception, but yours sounds exceptional. Did it work better previously?

Double check the attachment of the antenna connector into the Airport card. The last few models did not provide easy access. The connector takes a VERY firm press and click to properly seat. There were many reports of this problem, even after replacing a card.

Depending on model, check the routing of the antenna wire around the battery compartment. Some users reported pushing the wire around helps.

Although you state you have tried several Wifi sources, another source of poor reception is frequently interference, from microwaves, telephones, baby monitors etc. Best results are typically with a Wifi base station that can change the channel when it finds interference.

Finally, perhaps you have a broken antenna cable. IIRC, some G4s have the antenna cable go up to the screen.
