my ipod is disabled because i forgot the password and locked myself out. how do i fix it

i forgot my password and it locked me out of it and now it says ipod is disabled, connect to itunes. when i connect to itunes it says can't connect to itunes that the ipod is locked please unlock through ipod it wont let me unlock anything all it says is disabled.
