insertable disc cannot be read error message

Every time i reboot my iMac I get this red box that pops up that says,

"the insertable disc cannot be read...."

not exactly verbatim but close.

I don't have any CD/DVD's in the drive. The only things in the usb slots are the keyboard, printer and my external hard drive.

But the question is, why is the error coming up all of a sudden?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6)

Greetings,

Use basic isolation to determine where this is coming from. Remove all the devices from the computer and add them back in 1 at a time, restarting between each addtion.

When the message comes back, you've found your culprit. My guess would be the external HD. It may be damaged and needs repair: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8492.html

If it ends up being your printer, does your printer have a media card reader in the front for flash memory from cameras? Perhaps either the reader is damaged or there is a card inserted.

Hope that helps.
