My Quicktime won't play an HD .mov file

My editor sent me a project of mine as a web compressed file, a standard def file and as an HD file. The first two play just fine but for some reason, the HD files doesn't play at all. even though it ends in .MOV like the first two, a window pops up that says I may need to install additional software.

Why is that and what do I need in order to play a "different" kind of .MOV file. I am told that the file is prores.

Thanks.

The MOV file extension refers to the file container—in this case the generic QuickTime file container than may hold any combination of audio/video compression formats compatible with the system configuration on which the file was created. Apple ProRes is a visually lossless format that provides uncompressed HD quality at SD data rates. The message you are getting indicates the ProRes codec component is not installed (e.g., FCP is not installed) on your system. Luckily, Apple has made the ProRes QT decoder 1.0 component available as a download for OS X.4 and OS X.5 users with QT v7.5 or later installed.
