It may depend on where the file is from. The company I work with has messages and our tax forms in that format, but they will not open in Mac- not Safari, not Firefox, not Chrome. However, they open in Windows just fine.

I have Acrobat Pro and even tried Adobe Digital Editions. (I had some library books that had to go through there to be converted from mca or cdm or something to pdf or epub).

It must have something to do with the origin of the file and how it was created. Mine will prompt Fusion to open an IE window for it with Acrobat Reader X. Mind you, I have the Mac version, but it only pops a blank browser.

It is a companion file to a particular PDF file. It is used to populate a form with data, usually served online via a database.

Here's an explanation.

On a Mac, you are probably going to need Adobe Acrobat Standard or better (not free), to use it.

I've the same problem with online forms from danish Costums & Tax.

And I've tried all of the solutions and none of them helps.

So I've unfortunately felt forced to use Boot Camp and partition my Mac HD so I've now Windows installed and running on my Mac as well !!

This of course solves the problem.

So for me it seems that it's the origin of the forms and their actual use (as interactive online forms) that's causing the problem - and therefore danish Costums & Tax ought to look into this problem - but is that going to happen - hardly not !!

This really should be an embarrassment for both Apple and Adobe. What in the heck is wrong with you people that you can't solve this issue?

The problem is that when you download an fdf file, or xfdf file, and it is opened by Acrobat. So far so good, then up pops Safari, why?, I have no idea why it opens Safari, I hate Safari, but that is the only browser that Acrobat seems to think exists. Then, Safari wants permission to open the pdf from an Internet site that the fdf is going to fill in. No matter how many times you say OK, it just keeps asking for permission to open the pdf.

Here is the simple solution, tell Adobe and Apple to get their heads together and FIX this problem that has NOW BEEN AN ISSUE FOR FOUR YEARS!!! This is an example of really poor service.

Now my fix, download the OmniWeb browser, click and download the fdf file like usual, and then right click on that file and open it with Omni browser, and voila!!! A filled in PDF.

How effing hard is it for Apple to make a friggin browser that can actually open the pdf called for in an fdf file? If OmniWeb can do it, I would guess you folks might have a chance too!!!
