why do Americans think that American English is English?

Hi, I've managed to change my basic English to British English (I am in Australia and it's the closest). Why does my iphone still think that British English spells organisation with a z?? This really annoys me, I'm not American and don't use American English.

Why do you think Americans think that it is this way?

It seems that your issue is that the iphone ( manufactured by a U.S based company) is using this as a standard.

This does not mean that "Americans think that American English is English." It simply means that some words in the iphones dictionary are not translated properly for your countries standard spelling.

We can't help that you don't know how to spell things correctly.

Why do you insist in throwing "U"s into words(ie. Color) or pronouncing "I"s that are not there(aluminum)?

Just weird, stop it.

PS.

It was a joke.

Being as this is text and you cannot hear the tone of my voice or see my face-it's pretty much a crapshoot as to whether you will get it.

I have no problem with that, I believe the closest to the original 18th Century English is in Nova Scotia which is close to 18th Century Cornish (I seem to remember). .

English has always changed rapidly, that is a strength of the Language, however that is not the issue here.

The issue is that in England, the English are referred to as English and sometimes as British but never as British-English. It does not seem unreasonable to be able to call your own language by its name withou an externally enforced label.

We don't distinguish French as spoken in France (as opposed to Canada or various African nations) be referring to it is "Francais Francais". It is just Francais because that is what they speak in France.

No one here, except for perhaps the original poster, have shown any disrespect for anyone who speaks any of the many varieties of English.

By the way, if you're writing "proper English" your post should have read:

Idiocy and not respcting British English as a proper language. I think it's because they have issues with us (other people who speak proper English).

Even with the spelling and capitalization corrections, the first sentence is really still a fragment. No teacher of English (American) or English (British) would let it pass in a primary school essay.

Best of luck.
