iphone not working right

So for the past 2 days, when I try to either listen to my voicemail or call anyone, I can't hear anything. I have to use the speaker. All the other sounds seem to be working fine, but then again, those use the speaker. I'm updating the software for the iphone and hoping that works but if not, anyone else have this? DId you end up needing a new phone?
