Is there a code based upon the serial number, or some other method to determine when my iPhone was made? I'm trying to determine if it was made after September, 2008 to validate compatibility with a car stereo system.

Supposedly if you look at the serial number inf "Settings -> General -> About", the 3rd, 4th and 5th numbers represent the digit of the year, and the week. So mine is xx106xxxxxx = made in week six of 2011 (I got it at the end of Feb. from an AT&T corp. store).
I only read that in some iDevice tech lounge, so have no way of knowing if it is really true or not.
It is an accurate way to tell the date of manufacture. The only time it will catch you out is if it is a refurb replacement where they always used to start 5K on 3GS's, not sure if that has changed since the iphone 4.
Looks like its accurate. Bought my 3GS January 11th, and the code says 48th week of 2010.
