Before buying an iPad I want to be sure that it is safe for my eyes to read a complete novel with an iPad

If you have any doubt you could talk to you eye doctor about it and try it out in store. The iPad can also have it's screen brightness reduces. I'v found that reading on the iPad is like a best of both world combination of reading a physical book and reading on a computer. hope this is helpful.
In general you mean, as in is it basically safe to use an LCD for long periods of time? I sit at a computer screen all day at work - have for well over a decade now and that has not appeared to harm my eyes. I've read dozens of novels on my Nook Color, which is a very similar screen to an iPad, often reading for many hours straight when it has been crummy outside on weekends and such. Again, no harm that I or my eye doctor are aware of (I've worn glasses since a kid and see my eye doctor every 2 years).
I've never heard of any evidence that such devices used regularly for long periods of time inherently cause eye health problems.
We're not your eye doctor 😉 but millions of us read books and magazines from cover to cover on iPads, without any eye strain issues.......
