I don't have a gr8 plan on iPhone for data , however I have a 15 gb plan on my iPad 2 can you please let me know I'd iPad 2 locked to sim of you buy it through contract in UK? This is not a very good thing to disable personal hotspot on iPad 2 . I am sure this may be done intentionally but why ?? This is my first jump to apple devices and it's upsetting me already , however iPhone 4 is not doing bad

I specifically bought a 3G iPad 2 for this functionality because of this: (This link is the link you go to from Apple.com when you click "More info" on the rate plans)

AT&T* today announced it will sell iPad 2 in its retail and business channels beginning Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m. local time. Online sales will be available at http://www.att.com/iPad at 1 a.m. pacific time. AT&T offers several convenient billing options, none of which require a long-term contract. For a limited time, customers who activate a new postpaid $25/2 GB plan will receive the first month free**.

“We are thrilled to offer iPad 2 in our stores and give customers several easy ways to connect to the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network,” said Glenn Lurie, president—Emerging Devices, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets.

Customers may choose from the following options.

  • Monthly statements: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB***. Customers who exceed their monthly data allotment will be billed $14.99 for another 250MB on the $14.99 plan or $10 per 1 GB of overage on the 2 GB plan.
  • Credit card billing: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB****. Customers who exceed their monthly data allotment may choose to purchase another 250 MB on the $14.99 plan or purchase an additional 2 GB for $25 on the 2 GB plan.

Both options are month-to-month and do not require a long-term commitment.

The Personal Hotspot feature being introduced with iOS 4.3 is also available to customers who choose the $25 plan plus a $20 tethering option that provides an extra 2 GB of data.

AT&T really should have added ...."on your iPhone" at the end of that sentence. Looks like they are mixing iPad plans and iPhone plans without being clear about it.

In any event, if you want to complain to someone, I'd complain to AT&T about it (since it is their press release) and they are the ones who have been preventing and holding back hotspot features, not Apple.

I got an iPad 2 on a 24 month Vodafone plan to tether my Mac Airbook. I specifically asked Vodafone if this was possible and was told yes. You might wonder why I didn't buy direct from Apple who would have given me accurate advice? Well that's because I'd already bought my iPhone outright and took a sim only plan from Vodafone - only to find I'm not allowed to enable Personal hotspot on a sim only Vodafone plan. So either way Vodafone have got me! I'd really appreciate some practical suggestions because i need Internet access to work and if I can't get 3G access my only remaining option is satellite.

Chris CA,

With the launch of iPad 3 the prices of iPad 2 dropped somewhat. So I guess there might be a few cheapskates like me who only get the iPad 2 now. Thus, there might be a few more unhappy customers making this dissapointing discovery 9 months after the rest of you.

I don't know why this is available through a jailbreak but not as a standard feature.
