MBP3,1: internal trackpad and keyboard usb timeout since going Snow Leopard

most of the time i'm using this MBP3,1 with an external USB mouse and keyboard (apple aluminum). last night i wanted to minimize the clicking sound of the external mouse and wanted to switch to mousing on the trackpad. to my surprise the internal trackpad nor keyboard responded to anything. Snow Leopard install on this machine is about 2 weeks old now, this *never* occurred on Leopard for 3 years. it was late so i turned the machine off and went to sleep.

this morning i was almost certain i'm going to have to open it up and check the ribbon connection to the motherboard. but i booted the machine up before that and trackpad and keyboard were working again. unfortunately this was shortlived.

after some minutes of booting into Finder and doing regular work, the internal keyboard and trackpad die off with this is system.log:

googling yet *another* low-level fail on this apple "pro" laptop, turns out *again* it's a widespread problem, except seems like it was prevalent on Leopard. http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=128583 seems to be the most thorough thread, but none of the proposed solutions seem to apply, since all the software and firmware updates are already applied.

anyone have any thoughts on what else to do or look for about this? http://flippers.com/MacBookPro.html talks about resoldering the ribbon even, but it feels like it's just a case of crappy UHCI driver, since i have a working setup for a while at boot.

since apple's infinite wisdom dictates that one should not ever edit his posts after 15 minutes or so, i'm forced to keep track of my findings post by post, hope you all following don't mind.

first of all, i'm noticing signature updates don't reflect on original posts, so i should specify i'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.7. gonna put the hardware spec here as well:

just did a clean power off test of disconnecting my external keyboard and mouse, but keep a DisplayLink USB display connected. booted up, worked on the internal keybord and trackpad for a while, then left for lunch for 45 minutes. came back, everything still worked.

then plugged in a low speed USB smart card reader.

coincidence? i thinks not. next test is going to be plugging the external keyboard in and timing the fail. all i have to say is thank goodness for sub-minute boots on SSD. this is starting to look like some usb power management code failure in the driver.
