Got this while working on my new 15" MBP while tethered over USB to my iPhone4. Am I correct in understanding it was the connection to the iPhone that caused the panic?

No it was caused by VMWare. I've seen a few KP reports coming up because of VMWARE lately, most didn't even have the software running. It appears to be rare and not too frequent though so I wouldn't be terribly concerned. If it does repeat itself then use:
