Location Services while abroad...

I am wondering if keeping Location Services switched on while abroad is charging me the way that keeping data roaming switched on will. I currently have data roaming switched off, but it would be rather nice to use my maps and other apps that require location services...

However, I do NOT want a 5,000 dollar phone bill when I arrive home.

If you have data roaming turned off then location services should only use WiFi or GPS facilities to locate you. Unless you have downloaded a GPS program which stores the maps on your device you will not be able to use the Maps app when you are not connected to a server. You would have to switch to data roaming to do this and you are correct, it would be costly.
