VLC - default avi player?

hello

I am a new mac user coming from Windows

I have some .avi videos. I have downloaded VLC player for mac. How can i set this to the default player for this type of file as when i click on the file it tries to open quicktime. Files do play fine if opened from within VLC. I only want it to be the default player for avi's not all video and audio files.

Thanks Dave

VLC is one option for .AVI files.

Another option is to install Perian and playback .AVI files in the Quicktime player.

I install Perian on every Mac I own. Perian has other benefits, it will allow you to play most any video format in the Quicktime player. VLC is a great program, having them both installed gives you the best of both.

Perian is free.
