Zoom out further than picture width?

I'm trying to create a slide show using iMovie but I can't view an entire picture at once when the height of the picture is greater than the width. I can use Ken Burns effect to see it all but I can't show the entire picture at once. Am I missing something or is this a program limitation?

Also is there a way to set the default time length when a picture is added to the timeline?
