Just got my new Core i7 iMac with built in 4GB, and I have an additional 8GB to install. I want to match the memory banks, but how are the paired in the 27" iMac? That is, is a single bank constitute two DIMMs end-to-end, or two DIMMs right along side each other? The built in memory is installed end to end, but I don't want to automatically assume that Apple installed them in the same bank.

Open System Profiler (Applications + Utilities + System Profiler) or keyboard shortcut (Command + Spacebar then type System Profiler), then click Memory on the left pane and it will show you everything you need.

FWIW, apparently Apple does ship the 4GB iMac in separate banks.

Hi could you tell me please if it's the banks or the dimms that should be matched ideally?
I now have:
Bank0/Dimm0 - 2GB
Bank0/Dimm1 - 4GB
Bank1/Dimm0 - 2GB
Bank1/Dimm1 - 4GB
I didnt remove the factory installed chips, as reccomended by Apple Care but i'm not convinced.

I would put both 2GB DIMMs in Bank 0 and the 4GB DIMMS in Bank 1.
Which slots are which bank? (memory)
