import an old site back into iWeb to make changes

Some years ago I created a site using iWeb.

That site is live and I need to make some changes / additions to it.

My problem is that I do not know how to import it back into iWeb to make those changes.

Can somebody help me on that?

Thanks in advance,

Alain

iWeb '08, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi Alain,

You'd need the original "domain" file to import it back into iWeb. Do you have that? If not, you'd have to reconstruct it the best you can, using the live version as a reference.

(the domain file is found in username -> library -> application support -> iWeb).

You don't find the live version of your site.

iWeb has no import facility, so is unable to open a previously published site with html code. iWeb creates the code upon publishing, so it can't be done.

If you don't have a backup copy of your domain.sites file which is where iWeb stores data, then you'll have to re-build your site in iWeb and remember to save it this time and backup your domain.sites file.

Your domain.sites file is found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Note, it is your user library and not your system library.

Matti,

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

No, that's the problem... I do not have the original files... I'm not sure I understand where exactly I can find the live version (username -> library -> application support -> iWeb)... ?

Alain,

Sadly, there's no way to do what you'd like to do, to import the live website into a iWeb project. You can only open up an iWeb project from the domain file, the local version of your live site.

Ethmold gave some additional directions for how to find it. In the finder, you'd click on your username, then library, then application support, then iWeb. And inside the iWeb folder is a file called "domain" which is the file you're looking for. If you have a copy of your original domain file (either on your current machine or perhaps from a backup of an older computer if you are now on a new machine) you could open it and continue working on your site.

However, if you don't have that original domain file that was attached to your iWeb site, you would have to start a new one. It's not quite from scratch since you have the live version to use as a reference and to get material from, but it would have to be a brand new iWeb (domain) file.
