Q: How can I choose a lower resolution for YouTube videos to improve streaming / download speed?

Hi everyone,

Hopefully the title says it all...

How can I choose a lower resolution for YouTube videos to improve streaming / download speed?

I have an original and newer AppleTV and having logged into my YouTube account, it's automatically trying to stream a 720p version, which is taking a long time to start. Given that I don't really need a 720p stream for the videos I'm trying to watch, how can I set either AppleTV or my YouTube account to only download 360 / 480 files and speed up the whole experience?

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

    Hi Chenks,

That's a big shame as the combination of high quality of the videos and 8MB connection (which is not that slow) means AppleTV is rendered useless for catching up with YouTube playlists

If I could choose a lower resolution, it would be perfect and the AppleTV boxes would become my main internet TV device. I now have 2 x slightly more redundant Apple boxes just sitting beside my TVs... great.

    Thanks for the reply.

an 8MB internet connection is more than fast enough to be able to handle HD youtube videos.

if you are unable to use youtube then maybe you should check if you are actually getting 8MB an if your ISP is throttling certain traffic.

A possible workaround would be to play the video on your iPhone (3GS in my case, haven't tested it with an iPhone 4 or with an iPad) and AirPlay it to your apple TV. You will be getting the lower resolution version this way, which should start playing with no delays.

I use safari youtube on my ipod 5, but the hq button doesn't appear anymore on any videos. This means i cant watch anything. I tried wiping cookies, restarting, etc.

    Nothing.

Minutes away from just putting my fist through it and living out in the woods. Apple products have always been a buttpain to install and random crap like this happens all the time.
