imovie error code -108

I have just made a slideshow movie in imovie that is 45 min long. It is composed of all photos with transitions, music, and titles. I went to Share> media browser to publish it. I am trying to publish it in HD 1280x720 but after an extended length of time a message comes up saying that it is unable to prepare project for publishing. The error code is (-108). This is a very important project, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank You!

-108 mean you are running out of (free) RAM.

Try restarting the computer just prior to sharing. That frees up RAM.

Same issues. I'm starting to really really hate imovie. I've tried everything in the forums, and I still get error (-108) when trying to export my 1 minute clip at the lowest resolution, with no other applications open, and my clip is now the ONLY project (I've deleted all my work in a desperate attempt to fix this error).

I M also facing this same problem but i think i have figured out some other way to finish it. It is too long and tiresome but at least gives better result then awful MP4 quality.

Its true that it is RAM problem and it comes due to shortage of RAM. One can use Activity monitor to see RAM usage but i used FreeRam software ( u can get it free from App store). It used to crash when my free memory used to almost 0. I have MacBook pro with 4 GB Ram and 500 GB hard disk. My movie was only 3 min long and had all pictures and text in it. It gave 108 error again and again. I tried to check the limit of this error. It successfully converted when video length was around 1:30. It might be different on urs. So i divided into 2 parts. Exported in 1080p HD quality. Then in new project imported those two videos again, added one after another and then it exported successfully in 720p instead of 1080p. But its still way better than MP4 quality. However, problem is to adjust ur backgroud music so that they perfectly unite again. I know it will be hard for those who have very long movie but if its that imp than you should go for it. I think problem comes when you add pictures or text to the videos. If there are only videos then it does fine or maybe not if you do some advanced editing. It worked fine for me and took less than 20 MB RAM.
Or other solution is buy more RAM and install it if compatible with you mac.

I hope this helps.
PS . Do restart your comp and see to that your free memory is around 2.50 GB atleast. Rest do whatever you want to but just start your exporting after getting your free memory around 2.50 GB

The error is an iMovie bug and Apple has not addressed it.

I rebooted

I cleaned the PRAM

I do not have Time Machine running....and I was still getting the error

It appears to be Compression issue when Exporting to 1080p

Here is my work around and I was able to export at 1080p

Export using Quick Time ....then click on "options" and make the following changes.

In Video section.

-Change compression type to "Apple Intermidiate Codec"

-Compressor "HDV 1080p"

In Sound section

-use Apple lossless.

Same problem with Final Cut Pro X. The original movie is a HDV, from tape 1080i 25 Frames.

Wanted to save as 'same as original movie' and got error -108, including a strange message saying image xxxx cannot be encoded.

tried to free up space, restart mac etc. didn't help.

What I did and worked: Saved as ProRes 422 Proxy. This is a nice codec from where you can re-encode into other formats like H.264.

I figured out a workaround for my issue with error -108. My movie clips were avi files, and it seems like even though I had converted the clips, I would get the error from trying to add any effects to the clip that was longer than 15-20 seconds. So I broke down my project by adding the effects I wanted, 15 second clips at a time, converting them to an imovie, then importing the already converted clip with the effect I wanted to my project. It took me hours to do my 5 minute movie, but I got it like I wanted it.

I notice that when I import clips taken with my iphone, I have no issues with imovie. I can add loads of effects and have long footage, and no problem publishing the movie.

Looks like imovie (my version, anyway) hates .avi files with any effects.

I cannot believe this problem has been lasting for years and it's still there!!!!!!!!! Is this Apple??? This crap reminds me the past Windows experience, even worse. (in Windows, you can easily find substitutions.)

I am editing a very important video for my best friend. It's his wedding. And the 108 crap comes up all the time. Re-start, close other applications, leave only one project... doing all above can help NOthing. I don't have TM and the spare RAM is about 5GB. The resource (event) and distination (USB flesh) are different devices and both are pretty new. My mac is mini 2011 late version. I see no reason I should be boxed up.

Can anyone help??? It's terrible hurry!!! I just told my friend not to use Win-Tel laptop to do the video editing, especially at such critial moment. Now, it's a big joke for my friends. I don't want to speak to hunderds families and friends that "don't eat Apple from now on" in his wedding ceremony.

I have only 2 days to fix it. If I cannot do it, I will just redo everything with Windows system. To feel and compare which is worse. I hope Windows will reflesh my trust.

My system info:

Mac mini 2.3 GHz Intel i5

8GB 1333 DDR3

128 SSD (projection)

1TB USB HD (events)

32GB USB flesh (distination)

OS 10.8.3

iMovie'11 version 9.0.9 (1795)

Do you know why apple makes no comment about it? Because it is a software bug! And they didn't find a solution yet.

I've been read to much others people telling about this problem and it is not about memory requirements, it's not hardware failure. It's is software.

There's people that has apple desktop 16gb of ram, i7, time machine turned off, an empty hd as export destination and they're still receiveing -108 error.

I think that the one solution is to wait an software update and to remenber that even Apple is not infallible.

Very frustrated... Tuning on my PC and using Windows Video Maker on 5...4...3...2..1.. seconds...
