imovie error code -108

I have just made a slideshow movie in imovie that is 45 min long. It is composed of all photos with transitions, music, and titles. I went to Share> media browser to publish it. I am trying to publish it in HD 1280x720 but after an extended length of time a message comes up saying that it is unable to prepare project for publishing. The error code is (-108). This is a very important project, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank You!

-108 mean you are running out of (free) RAM.

Try restarting the computer just prior to sharing. That frees up RAM.

hello from France

same problem today

my configuration : iMac late 2009 - 27" - 8GO - 1TO with free space 781 GO - 4x2 core; OSX Lion.

- time capsule with time machine inactive

- QT plug-ins : only appleIntermediate codec and AppleMPEG2codec

- iMovie11 with project on the internal HD and evenements on an external HD.

- my movie : 1h 3mn

1) share with iTunes in 1280x720 : 2 correct; 1 with err 108 after about 40 minutes; i've seen the movie on my HD TV with my appleTv : correct, but not perfect cf the definition.

2) share with itunes in 1900x1080 : 3, all with err 108 after ten or 15 minutes

3) export in 1900x1080 : 3, all with err 108. after 5 minutes.

I've looking my memory when iMovie's working : 3,04 Go active; 3,58 Go free, Wired 0,6 Go, Inactive 0,7 Go.

processors : between 150 % and 300%.

Also, iMovie quit 1 time; report send to Apple.

I need absolutely a movie in 1900x1080; this movie will be projected thursday the 17 in a theater !

How to do?

Thanks

The standard resolution should be 1920x1080. Try a different codec than the one(s) you tried.

Try a safe boot, then boot normally before trying again.

Remove any third-party QT plug-ins you might have, such as extra codecs. Some DivX codecs are known to cause problems.

1920x1080 ? of course! i don't see how to choise a 1900x1080 resolution when sharing to iTunes...

i've all tried :

- restarting the iMac (many times).

- removing all plugs-ins (perian, flip4mac and others...)

- i've lauched ONYX and clean the caches (QT...), repaired permissions, deleted imovie preferences...

- when starting in safe mode, it's impossible to launch imovie; in the window response i can see : "quartz extreme is necessary. iMovie need a graphic card compatible with quartz extrme...." On my precedent post, i describe my configuration : iMac late 2009 (core i7)! my graphic card is a radeon HD 4850-512 MB, original.

- Always, i've verified the RA memory; good, in every try; about 3 to 5 GO free.

Yesterday :

- i can't share to iTunes in 1280x720 resolution : err 108

- i can't share to iTunes in 1920x1080 resolution : err 108;

someways, imovie quit when processing, one way, i ought "force to quit" imovie.

- i can't share to Quicktime in 1920x1080 resolution; i've got an err -6662 or imovie "quit unfortunately"

I'm getting seriously tired of apple solutions.

I have had this problem several times and after much trial and error, now understand what is happening.

It is a RAM problem - and this is how I fixed it. I had a 24 minute slide show (with music and small bit of video) that continued to get a -108 error even though I have a 4 GB RAM system. I have many old projects that I have kept in iMovie, and when iMovie is opened up, ALL of these projects are viewed and are using up the memory I needed for processing my project. Here is what I did.

1) Open up your Activity Monitor (in utilities) to see how much free memory you have before you open up iMovie.

2) Shut down all other applications using memory- you will see your free memory increase.

3) Go to your iMovie Project and iMovie Events folders and make a copy of them on your hard drive. Once that is done, remove all projects and events from the original folders except the one you are working on. Your older projects will be saved in your backup folder that you just copied.

4)Keep your activity monitor open (so you can watch how much RAM your project is using as you process) and open iMovie. You should ONLY see the one project you are working on.

5)Now try to process/share your project and render it to a Movie or to iDVD.

It should work, and if it doesn't, you will be able to see in your Activity Monitor how much RAM you need to run the project. I shut everything down, including Safari to get my memory up before processing the movie. A lengthy movie like mine needed almost 2GB of free RAM to compile.

Hope that helps - I know how frustrating this error can be!

Thank you for your advice. I applied it in full.

After restarting the computer, the memory is 6.88 GB. After launch iMovie: 5.82 GB. Only one project and one

event are available. So I tried again to export the film; result:

1) first attempt: Error -108 after 3 minutes, at which point the memory is 5.28 GO.

2) second attempt : after restarting the computer and relaunch iMovie: iMovie crashed after a

minute.

3) third attempt, after restarting the computer and iMovie : export has been running for a

hour then 108 err! no problem of RAM, the activity monitor shows that iMovie uses

approximately 1.6 GB of RAM in a stable manner, and the RAM is also quite stable around 3 GB.

During attempts, no other application is running, only iMovie.

For me, the -108 error has nothing to do with a problem of memory management;

Please note that this problem is the same on my second computer, the same iMac (late 2009 - i7 - 8GO RAM) running with Snow leopard.

Err 108 isn't a Lion's error.

For me, ther's a bug in iMovie.

Sorry that didn't work for you - seems like you started out with enough RAM to begin with. I have had trouble a few times processing from iMovie but don't recall if they were all -108 errors. I do know that one of my projects had trouble processing a video clip that I had used and downloaded from Youtube. Once I removed that from the project it worked. It's amazing how many -108 errors people are getting with iMovie - it is extremely frustrating to have to wait 15 minutes each time you try something before the processing crashes. Good luck - and please post if you find a solution to your problem.

There was one person who posted that indicated it might be related to how much contiguous (unfragmented) hard drive space was available on the hard drive. I don't know if I can find that Discussion Thread again, but I will look through my bookmarks and edit this posting if I find it in time. His solution was to use the Apple Care Hardware Test disk he got after purchasing Apple Care. It comes with a copy of Tech Tool (which is a suite of disk repair utitlities and performance optimizers). One part of the Tech Tool program will go through and rearrange the files that sit on your disk so you have lots and lots of contiguous open blocks of storage on the hard drive. In his case it made all the difference and 'memory' for his case was I guess 'virtual memory' being stored as a file on the internal hard drive.

Okay, found the discussion thread I was looking for and here's the link:

I still got the 108 error. I have enough space on my internal harddrive. I made a backup of all my projects and I have only 1 project running. I deleted the file " elikness" advised. I didnt run any program, wifi or timemachine. And I still got the error when i export to 1080p. 720p is working.

I dont want to buy a tech tool, because I think that Imovie must work normaly without all this tricks....

Nov 23, 2011 1:23 AM in response to elikness

My source clips are HD (1920x1080) from a canon tape camcorder (HV30 in France). Others clips are coming from a friend (Sony) on a dvd. I've convert these clips with MPEGStreamclip before import into my events. I don't think it' the problem because i can export one way in 720p.

i'm actually testing FCP X with the demo version; the quality of the transcodage is "top" compared to iMovie. No export for the moment.
