What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is lowercase?

The "i" stands for "intelligence", and it is lowercase because it is indicative of some of the forum queres.

The i first appeared as a prefix for the iMac. As this was the first one to be equipped with the internet it's a pretty safe bet to assume that it stood for 'internet'.
After that it became a bit of a signature for apple and a kind of unofficial trademark and gets used on everything cos apple think it looks trendy.
Although to be fair the iPod does play tunes that you download using the internet, so there is a link i suppose.
I think this is right but will no doubt get some Mac nerd disagreeing.

The "i" stands for "internet", and it is lowercase to differentiate from the older, professional products. The name was created by a company that Apple uses for product identification. Another purchased name is "PowerBook". For some reason the "iUse iPana ToothPaste" brand never made it out of the think tank.

"education" - the product was originally designed specifically for the educational market

that probably explains 5 in each classroom at my school, but we also have about 10 new iMacs G5 and a bunch of iBooks G4

I have never claimed that I was better than anyone. One poster got upset over a comment, and he got his shorts tied in a knot.
