Hi I am using VM Ware fusion to do some processing for work that requires windows. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the windows install to recognize the portable hard drive that i am using to do the work on. Wehn I share the hard drive it says i dont have permission to wriet to the hard drive. Anyone know how I can get this to work?

If the external drive is formatted NTFS, you won't be able to write to it from Mac OS X (which is actually running your machine, even when you have Windows running in VMWare) unless you install NTFS-3G or Tuxera NTFS on the Mac.
If you were running Windows via Boot Camp, you'd be able to write to an NTFS disk without any fuss.
Does it just run in he back ground or does it reformatt the harddrive?
Assuming you're asking about NTFS-3G and Tuxera NTFS, they are drivers (one freeware, the other commercial and more polished) that enable writing to NTFS drives without reformatting. Once installed, they're invisible to the user.
