My dictionary icon is gone and in its place is an icon with two sheets of paper and pencils. It does nothing. When I look at the apps on my computer it's also gone and the paper and pencils icon is there also and does nothing.

Long shot: The only icon I know of that resembles what you are describing is the App Store icon. I see you're on 10.5.x Did you recently update to 10.6.6 or 7? Of course, this doesn't explain why you don't find Dictionary in Applications or why it's missing in the Dock. And, doesn't explain "two sheets of paper."
Otherwise, no idea what that icon is or what it's doing there.
If you open About this Mac from the Apple menu>Applications, do you find it there? What you may have to do is use Pacifist to reinstall just that app. Read this on using:
If you have lost the dictionary icon from the dock the icon you mention sounds like it could be the text edit icon It may have simply been sitting next to the dictionary amongst the rest of your icons ... though why it won't respond, I don't know.
Duh, yes, that sounds right. I have so many icons in my Dock placed on the shorter, left side of the screen that I can hardly see them (and never use icon view when opening the Applications folder) and I never really looked at the TextEdit one. Two sheets of paper, but what looks like a ball point pen to me.
But Appleworks 6 is very similar, with an A, and it clearly has a pencil.
ronda: I'd try running Disk Utility (in Utilities) Verfiy Disk. Also, how much free space on the Drive? CMD-I on the Hard Drive folder. You should keep a minimum 15-20% free. This can cause things to get very screwy.

You have maybe deleted the dictionary. Write dictionary in spotlight and found the original icon. Put it in the application folder after that.
