Wow, that was a fast answer. I've been hoping that the opposite was true. I'd like an iPad 2 to replace my iPad, but would rather use the psuedo-suede Apple case for more protection...

It won't work, but I wouldn't let that deter me. The Smart Cover is really nice, and a wide variety of aftermarket polycarbonate back covers are coming onto the market. I think the combination of the two would give you sleek protection at least as nice as the orignal iPad cover.
