Locked in portrait mode, accelerometer works fine for games and apps. Orientation lock is off. Did full upgrade and restore with no backup. Problem still exists. Any ideas before returning to carrier? Phone is only 4 days old

Not sure what you mean by "full" restore, but if you restored as new, without using any backup, and your phone was never hacked/jailbroken, you certainly have a hardware failure and need replacement.
Full restore meaning I was on 4.3.1 and restored to 4.3.3 with no backup. It works fine for everything, just no landscape for surfing/typing.
What apps are you trying to look at in a different orientation? For example; the home screen is only available in portrait mode.

If you purchased directly from Apple you have 14 days from date of purchase for a refund or exchange. If you purchased anywhere else, best to check their policy.
I am not trying to be rude, but this is my 4th idevice, so I know pretty well how they work. No landscape in SMS, mail, safari, calculator etc. But I can play labyrinth, for instance, with no problems. It worked perfect when I plugged it in to charge last night, then this morning it didn't work. No changes to anything.

If you restored to 4.3.3 without using a backup, as opposed to updating - an entirely different process - all your data and settings would have been deleted from the phone. Is that the case?
I was on 4.3.1 and I clicked restore iTunes said update and restore? I said yes. It said from backup? I said no.
i got fed up and disgusted and gave it a good tap inside a thick rubber case and now it works fine. must have just got stuck somehow. thoughts on if i should return to my carrier now that i dont have the problem and cant re-create it?
I had the same problem.
I just rebooted. It fixed the problem.
Just hold down the button on the top of the iPhone and you will be asked to Slide to Power Off.
Then start by pressing the button on the top of the iPhone.
i rebooted and restored numerous times, the swift kick in the butt was the only thing that fixed it. somehow it got stuck but still worked for games and such. as soon as i tapped it it rotated. thanks you everyone for your help and quick responses.
I have the same problem. Currently running 4.3.5 software. At the very top of the screen I have a lock symbol and an arrowed circle around it which would indicate that somewhere, there is a setting which allows it to be unlocked. I was in the middle of doing something last week when I didn't read the message that appeared and hit the OK button and I got a response which said "Your phone is now locked in portrait mode". I've been through every possible setting and then some but there is nothing to indicate how the lock can be undone. I cannot access anything in landscape mode.
Double click the home button to show the recently opened apps. Slide them to the RIGHT and you'll see the iPod controls, iPod icon on the right and PORTRAIT LOCK icon on the left. Tap the icon to unlock.

Thanks modular747. I found the response on another thread but forgot to reply here. I did find another reply that said that the problem was something that Apple hadn't yet fixed but somehow didn't believe that was correct. I've downloaded the manual - I'm an iPhone newbie and of course, you don't get an instruction manual with it like you do with normal phones 😉
