Sample books won't download

When I attempt to get a book sample from within iBooks, I get an error dialog that says: " iBooks is required to download this document. You can download iBooks for free from the App Store. It doesn't matter what book I attempt to get a sample of and iBooks will let me purchase and read books. I am running iBooks 1.2.2 on an iPad2 under 4.3.3. The iBooks app works fine on my iPhone using the same iTunes account.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.2

I'm having the exact same difficulty. My iPad 2 has never been jailbroken; I just updated to 4.3.3 and the latest iBooks versions, but still can't download any sample. I CAN select a sample from iTunes on my Mac, and then open it in iBooks on the iPad, but CAN'T download directly from within the app.

I suspect that another app is interfering, perhaps a PDF reader (I have GoodReader and several others), but until the problem is resolved there is little likelihood I'll be buying anything from the iBookstore.

I have had the same problem with both the IPad 1 and 2. It appears related to PDF apps as when they are removed IBook functionality returns. Apple support always acts as if they never heard of the problem. Apple has gone through several major updates of it's operating system without correcting this problem which explains why many of us keep using the Kindle app. The downloading of purchased books works fine but I refuse to remove all PDF apps just to be able to download samples of ebooks.

The problem is a conflict with the app Sign-N-Save. Delete it and you can download samples again. I like Sign-N-Save and I hope they'll fix it.

The problem is not limited to Sign-N-Delete. I've deleted this without deleting all of the other PDF apps with no effect. Samples will still not download. Hopefully, in the next major update to IOS, this will be repaired. With all of the complaints about this problem with Ibooks, you would think that if Apple is serious about competing with Kindle and Nook, they would fix this but for now Sign-N-Delete is only one piece of the puzzle.

The app is not Sign-N-Delete it is Sign-N-Save.

All I know is:

  1. I never had any problems downloading iBook samples before, ever.
  2. Installed Sign-N-Save 3 days ago and used it.
  3. Today could not download iBook samples.
  4. Thought, thought, thought, pondered, pondered, pondered...and repeated.
  5. Found this forum topic.
  6. See #4.
  7. Conjectured that Sign-N-Save might be in conflict.
  8. Deleted Sign-N-Save.
  9. Immediately tried to download iBook samples again.
  10. It worked!
  11. See #’s 4 & 6.
  12. Conjectured this was the problem.

  14. Made this post, trying to be of some assistance.

Have a wonderful Independence Day and read the U.S. Constitution.

Thanks to all for the advance work.

In case this is related to a more recent or the current app release of pdfexpert, i wanted to put a timestamp on the thread. writing to add to the confirmations that removing pdfexpert solved the problem of inability to download samples in ibook - just encountered on ipad2. Could download ibook samples fine up until now or at least up until around November 2011. The change was so abrupt I thought it at first a ploy to force ibook sales :), but it may be related to a more recent release of pdfexpert.

Action: removed readdle's PDFExpert app, closed and reopened ibooks and i was able again to download samples.

Different about my example is I have alot of doc handling (ezsign, docusign), office, print and pdf tools (readdle, pdfexpert, scan2pdf, save2pdf, print2pdf) installed. Removing first and only pdfexpert app by readdle solved this.

Googled this problem on a whisper of hope, found this thread and you all helped resolve.
