Could you post your diagnostics for us please?

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

    to get CD diagnostics.bmp

    ... and click "Next".

When you get through to the final screen:

    diagnostics complete.bmp

... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here.

Check at your downloads page at Acer Support. Are there any newer versions available of the firmware for your drive?

b noir- here are my diagnostics. I've been searching both Microsoft Windows and Apple boards for a solution to the same problem. No amount of showing down my burn speed, changing files to mp3, and a variety of other tweaks have fixed it. From what I can tell, it is an incompatability between Windows 8 and iTunes. I've bolded the error message information at the bottom of my diagnostics. I hope you can help- this is really frustrating!

From what I can tell, it is an incompatability between Windows 8 and iTunes.

Possibly not. The vast bulk of the diagnostics I've seen for this "new 4310" are from Windows 8 systems, but ScottH19's diagnostics in this topic indicate it can happen on a Windows 7 system too.

The main commonality appears to be that the Optical drive model and firmware revision don't appear properly in the diagnostics. Here's what your one shows as:

    D: TSSTcorp DVD+/-R, Rev

... whereas I'd also expect to see a model number and a revision number in there. For example, in my diagnostics, my drive appears like so:

    E: MATSHITA DVD/CDRW UJDA775, Rev CB03

Can you check something for me please? Do you see a full version number for that TSSTcorp drive in your Device Manager? If so, what's your version number?

  • StaceyPT Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

No it does not have a model and revision number. I can see the Driver version (6.2.9200.16384) and a variety of other information by double clicking on the disk drive though. Is there anything else in there that would help diagnose the issue?

  • b noir Level 9 Level 9 (72,025 points)

Okay. That's consistent with the HL-DT-ST variations of this. (Most commonly, this issue is reported for some sort of HL-DT-ST drive ... but I've seen one other report of a TSSTcorp drive previously.)

Whatever's going on, it appears to be related to an inability for Windows to identify the drive correctly. Other burning software is able to cope with it, apparently, but it throws iTunes into a fantod, and folks get the 4310s.

If you've got the time, would you mind submitting a bug report to the programmers?

Start by registering (for free) as an Apple Developer:

    http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/

... and then you can use the Bug Reporter to submit trackable bug reports:
