Red glowing dot!!

Hey guys, today I noticed a red glowing dot above the earpiece of the iphone4. and when I press the sleep/wake button to turn the phone in sleep mode, the light disappeared in some secs. that light again appeared when I wake the phone from sleep mode and this continues untill I re-started the phone. Is this normal or something wrong with my iphone?

iPhone 4, iOS 4.2

That is the proximity sensor and you may want to take it to an apple store to get it checked out.

I know that is proximity sensor, but why was it glowing?

Because it's probably defective or headed in that direction. You can restore your iPhone but you'll probably need to take it in to Apple.
