Move from trial to full version of Aperture 3

I have been using the trial version of Aperture 3 for a week now, and I am really impressed with it. I would like to buy the App version from the App Store. What is the best way of doing this? Do I have to remove the trial version and then purchase and install the App version, or do I just purchase and install the App version and it will overwrite the trial version? I have read a few threads where someone went from the trial to the full version and because of the way then did it, it could not accept updates because it was still being seen as a trial version. I am still new to Apple and not comfortable with the way Macs handle software installation and removal. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi and welcome (to the Mac and Aperture!),

The Mac App Store is fairly new and it changes some of the things we were used to when it comes to software installs and removals. For the most part it makes it a lot simpler, also allowing for an application to be installed and managed on several computers at once.

Before the MAS, you could purchase a serial number and transform the trial to a full version — they were always the same app. Now, the serial numbers are gone so I'd guess the trial is a different build of the app. Just to be safe, I'd delete it from the Applications folder prior to purchasing the MAS version. This won't affect anything you've done with the trial so far, the prefs should simply transfer over.

I updated iPhoto through the MAS a few months ago and it was painless.

You should be fine but report back if you have any trouble and we'll try and figure things out.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Okay, just so I have it right and make no mistakes, I simply go into my Applications folder and delete Aperture 3. I am used to Windows where you need to run an uninstaller program, so this just seems too simple. Now, if I have that right, what about the Aperture 3 Trial Library in my Pictures folder? I really only played with a few photos, and it is a Referenced Library (as opposed to a Manage Library). I want to start off as a Managed Library, so should I just delete the trial Library as well before buying the MAS version?

You're welcome 🙂

You don't have to delete the trial library. It'll probably be the one that opens by default when you first launch Aperture but you can very easily create a new one afterwards.

Btw: you can easily switch from referenced to managed by using the Consolidate Masters command and switch back to referenced with Relocate Masters. Read up on both options for the best strategy.

Have fun!

We're in a kind of limbo with Aperture right now because of the transition to the Mac App Store. Logically that BUY link should take you to the MAS and let you buy from there without having anything else to do. But I don't know if they've changed it to do that — you'll have to try and see for yourself.

What may happen is that it'll work like it did before and you'll instead get taken to the Apple Store and be offered the $199 full version or $99 upgrade. Which is a little odd and — I have to agree with you — very un-Apple.

Basically there are two versions of Aperture 3 floating around: the $79 MAS version and the $199 Apple Store version. Both are identical in function but the $199 version still works with a serial number. You also get a DVD but frankly I haven't used an Aperture DVD since version 1.5 (I've been downloading the trial and purchasing a serial number upgrade since then).

Confusing? Yeah, it is.

But unless you want to pay more for the same thing, I'd go with the $79 MAS version. You might not even have to delete the trial but it's just a precaution in light of certain stories on this forum. Deleting the trial application won't affect anything you've done with Aperture 3 until now so don't worry, it's really not a big deal.

When I downloaded the trail, Apple emailed an activation key that had to be entered when launching Aperture for the first time. I had assumed that buying Aperture would result in getting a new activation key, not in downloading Aperture again. Can someone tell me which it is? If it is a new download, I will find the fastest internet connection I can since Aperture is about 1 GB. I also assumed that clicking "buy" would strictly be an online transaction and therefore $79, as opposed to $199 for the DVD version.

As I said, that's how it used to work. I don't know where the BUY button links to now. But just to be clear:

- Aperture 3 in the Mac App Store is $79 download only. No serial.

- Aperture 3 in the Apple Store is $199 for the physical version OR an activation key. No difference. If you're upgrading it's $99. That's what most of us here paid before the MAS was launched.

You can't activate the trial for $79. Unless they've changed it recently. That deal is good only on the Mac App Store, which means you'll need to download the full app again from there.

I am happy to report that it was very easy to delete the trial version of Aperture 3 (just drag it to the trash!). I also deleted the trial library the same way. I next went to the MAS and clicked on BUY for Aperture 3, and it did not give me the expected dmg file. It directly installed it into the applications folder and I was ready to go. No serial number needed. It has been my experience with Windows that nothing beats a nice clean install with no left overs from previous versions. Maybe that is not necessary with Apple, but since it was so easy to do, old habits die hard. This is an awesome application for only $79!!!!!

That has not been my experience. 2 days ago, I deleted the trial version, then bought a copy from the App Store. It works just the same as the trial, except it does not ask if you want to buy it.

You could look in Activity Monitor to see what is using the most CPU time & memory. Let us know the top 3 CPU % users and how many page outs. If you run "top" from the Terminal, it will show %CPU idle. Type "q" to quit.

Francois,

The Mac App Store in Snow Leopard and Lion has nothing to do with the App Store for IOS — it IS for Mac OS X. If you want to buy Aperture 3 then delete your trial version, go to the Mac App Store and buy Aperture 3 for $79.

Deleting the trial version will NOT affect any work you've done with it: the full version of Aperture will simply open that default library and you'll be ready to go.

Don't buy the $199 version from the Apple Store, you'lll just be throwing money away. All you'll get is a DVD, a box and some tutorial files. The MAS version is identical in every way and will be the only version available in the near future. I don't understand why Apple is still selling the $199 boxed version.

For the record: I've been using Aperture since version 1.2 and paid $99 to upgrade from 2 to 3 when it came out (before the MAS). Obviously my next "upgrade" will be through the MAS.
