Hi, you may be limited to what hard drive you can install internally according to this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
The eMac only supports Parallel IDE hard drives, and not SATA hard drives for internal drives, and the jumper configuration should match what is inside the machine. The installation should be left to an authorized repair center. If the above article 86178 article doesn't apply to you, yes a 500 GB Parallel ATA drive would work.
Best regards
In practical terms, you are not limited to hard drive size in your eMac.
You can install the largest suitable which I am aware of is 500GB.
Any drives in the following link will fit your eMac.
You can also double your RAM. After Apple engraved the RAM specs in stone, RAM makers developed 1G modules that let you max the RAM at 2G. We used this module to upgrade our 1.42G eMac:
1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHz CAS 2.5 184 Pin DIMM
We have one of those plus a 26MB stick for a total of 1.25G RAm and the computer is rock-solid.

Thank you Mac community for the assistance and perticularly thanks to allen for making me aware of the ram upgrade option i was unaware
Thanks! I should point out that this extra RAM capacity only applies to the USB 2.0 eMacs like yours and mine. Older eMacs are still stuck at a 1G Max RAM
