Downloading QuickTime Files from Web Page

I used to be able to download QuickTime files that were embedded on a web page, by clicking and holding on the downward arrow on the right side of the player and making a menu selection. Now the menu doesn't appear, in fact nothing happens when I click on it. Has something changed recently, and is there some new trick involved in getting these files to download?

Mac Pro Dual Quad 2.8, Mac OS X (10.6.1), 6 Gig RAM, Logic, Final Cut, Adobe CS3, Sibelius 6, etc etc

I'm afraid there is no one place at Apple where all changes are documented. There is sometimes an official Apple Knowledge Base article about something new or different, but too often there isn't. I don't know of any Apple pronouncement on how to download QuickTime media with the new QT X, nor have I seen the new behavior of requiring the Command key to remove things from Sidebar discussed anywhere except discussion forums.

What I do for something that plays in QuickTime X, rather than the old QT player (some things play in one, some in the other, and I have no idea what the difference is), is go to the Window menu, bring up Activity and look for the media file on the list, then Option double-click it. It will then download with Download manager.

Thanks Francine, your helpful tip seems to work well in Safari, which has the Activity option in the Window menu you mentioned.... but I mostly use Firefox, which doesn't have that option. However, I did a little experimenting in Firefox just now, and discovered I can download files from a directory page containing the file names (as opposed to the old way of using the name as a link to open the QT player window) — Hold the Option key and click once on the link/file name in the directory, a contectual menu opens with the "option" (appropriately enough) to download the file. Cool! So it's not the same method, but definitely a workaround, as long as there's a directory page to work from. Hope this helps anyone else.

There have definitely been some odd little changes in recent system updates. Not to derail my own thread, but I found I can't just drag/poof items from the Finder window sidebar any more. Fortunately I found out I need to hold Command while dragging the items I want to poof, but that's a new thing, in the previous system you just dragged them off without any helper key. So it's got to be something similar with this QT save issue. Is there some document on the Apple site that itemizes all these funny little changes in Snow Leopard updates?

Don't know if you're familiar with soundcloud.com, but as an active musician I've found that to be the most streamlined way to share music online. Basic membership is free, they have their own download engine, been using them for about a year and a half now and I love it. Might suggest that to your friend if he hasn't already heard of it.

And there I go derailing my own thread again....
