Instruments plugged in to headphone jack won't record

I've plugged in my bass and guitar through the headphone jack in GarageBand for the iPad, but it refuses to record from anything but the mic. I've tried messing with various settings and nothing seems to work. I feel alike if I could select an imput device, that would fix it, but I haven't seen a way to do that. Am I missing something?

Any ideas?

Thanks, Trueno07

I didn't see it listed in the specs, so I didn't think the iPad could do this, but I think you're right in that it can. I've never used the iPad headphone jack as an input, so I don't have 1st hand experience. However, I found a couple links that might be helpful:

I'm using the Griffen Technology Guitar adapter which plugs into the headphone jack. It also has a headphone splitter attached so you can monitor tracks while you play with the instrument plugged in. It works great. You can also use that input to plug in small speakers WHILE your instrument is plugged in the iPad and use it as a makeshift amp. Today I tried to use it with my Previa Keyboard and that worked too except I have to choose the Amp in the instrument selection area. It makes it sound like a guitar but those sounds can be changed when mixing later.

Not a perfect solution but I already had the adapter from when I bought I shred.
