What is the format/codec of the .mov file? It may be made with a codec that isn't supported in FCE or it could be a muxed MPEG file. Open it in QuickTime Player 7 and hit Command i to see.

It is in MPEG-4Video, 320 x 240, Millions, AAC,2 channels, 44100 Hz, 478x 359 pixels. Is that the incorrect format? If so how can I change it? I appreciate your help!
That can't be edited in FCE. The smallest format that FCE supports is 720x480. It needs to be QuickTime using the DV codec at 29.97fps with uncompressed 48k audio. You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert it.
Like Tom said, it needs to be converted to an editing format that works with FCE prior to importing. And MPEG Streamclip is a good choice. However, since the video has already been compressed to MPEG-4 at reduced pixel dimensions, don't expect the quality to be any good at all.

Thank you I'm trying to import a new version that will hopefully be compatible

Same problem with this kind of .mov files :
GoPro AVC encoder, 1280 x 720, Millions
AAC,Stéréo (G D), 48,000 Khz
29,97 fps
Does it mean I have to convert my files with Mpeg Streamclip? GoPro encoder is not supported in FCE 4?
Regards,
Yes, you have to convert it.

Yes. You'll need to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). Nothing shot on todays consumer and prosumer camcorders is meant to be edited natively.
mish
Thanks for your precious help to a FCE newbie!
Last (hope so 😕) question :
When I export my FCE work (File-Export-QuickTime sequence = basics settings), I obtain this kind of file :
Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 x 720 (1248 x 702),Millions
16-bitEntier (Petit Boutien), Stéréo, 48,000 Khz
But I can't read it with QT for windows or Windows media Player. Black screen from the beginning to the end of the movie...
What's wrong?
Thanks from Paris, France
If you want to make a file that will be compatible with Window Media Player, you'll need to convert to .wmv (Windows Media Video). You'll need one of the paid versions of flip4mac for that: http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm or you can convert to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 (most later versions of WMP can play both).
As far as I know, the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) is a Mac only codec and not available for windows. Convert the AIC file to a format that will match one of the codecs installed on the Windows computer that will be playing the file.
