macbook unibody aluminum ram maximum

Hello,

I have the only (I believe) macbook unibody aluminum model that was produced in late 2008. So essentially a macbook pro. I know that in Apple's specs it says the max ram is 4gb, but to my knowledge I believe it is now possible to go up to 8gb. This is also mentioned in the mactracker app for what it's worth. So my question is can I really go to 8gb or will there be some issues? Thanks!

According to OWC you can go up to 8gb of 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

MacBooks with a Model ID of MacBook 5,1 should have a Boot ROM version of MB51.007D.B03 in System Profiler.

If your Boot ROM version does not match the numbers above, download the appropriate

For MacBooks (MacBook5,1)
MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 (Apple.com Download)

Once you have ensured that the Boot ROM is the correct version, make sure your Operating System is updated to Mac OS X v10.6.6. You must be running Snow Leopard to address 8GB on these systems.

Have a look at this:

As you can see, it is reported that you can go to 8 GB and, since OWC reports that, I'd probably say it'd be ok to go with that. Being cautious myself, I'd definitely get the RAM from them; they are very reputable anyway and, in this case, you'd have a good case if it didn't work properly.

Hello,

I have late macbook 2008

it meets the criteria you mentioned :macbook 5.1 and the system profiler

I am also running the latest version of Lion

Will I have trouble installing 8gb pc3-8500 RAM or not?

crucial says its max of 4gb , so does Apple support site

I dont want to buy the RAM then it wouldnt work or make my computer crash, because it would be lik I burned my money. its useless.

Do I have to buy the RAM for OWC for it to work or will any pc3-8500 RAM will work?

This is from the everymac.com site:

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Originally, this model was only unofficially capable of stably supporting 6 GB of RAM, but as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, it is capable of supporting 8 GB of RAM if updated to Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 and running MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or higher.

You need to buy quality RAM from a reputable vendor with a lifetime warranty. You don't have to get it at OWC, but it should be Crucial or OWC or Hynix brands - not some discount "value" RAM because you will have problems with it.

Personally, I do not feel comfortable to go higher than what Apple supports, but that is up to you. If you buy it at OWC, you could probably return it if it doesn't work because they say it will work with 6 GB.

I can confirm that 8gb works just fine. And I tried to get the OWC ram because I believe they do guarantee it. However, I'm not in the US and I couldn't complete my order via OWC (they don't have the best ordering system honestly) so I just ordered from Amazon:

So far I haven't had any problems...at least none that I can tell...

And here was the post where I asked for an OWC alternative before:

Thanks a lot for your help,

I just want you to know that I went to a local shop and bought:

2GB+4GB= 6GB RAM at 1333mhz pc3-10600 Kingston

My originals were:

1066mhz and pc3-8500

I just want to know will I be ok? Or will I face issues?

I really do not know what those numbers mean.

i installed them and my computer is functional now no problems yet. System profiler identified the RAM as 2Gb and 4GB 1333mhz DDR3 , Status: OK . I am just worried it will give me trouble in the future.

Again I cant thank you enough in helping me with this issue

You should be ok as long as you didn't buy the "Value RAM" line from Kingston (it would say so in the description) and, as long as the specs are exactly as stated by Apple, it should be fine. I've never bought Kingston, so I don't know if they have a warranty or not - OWC and Crucial have lifetime warranties which is handy in case one fails.
