My magic mouse drops out!

I'm having the exact same problem.

Here's what I found, as I have troubleshooted myself, since I have tried new batteries, and the batteries show a good charge on a volt meter, it's not the batteries, but the contacts themselves. It's almost like a capacitor that wasn't rated high enough was used, so the sudden shock of just moving it sometimes, yields it to power off. A capacitor that was good enough would have filtered this ripple.

I've notied this a lot lately, Apple has been using underrated capacitors. I don't know if this is Apple or Foxconn (if they make the magic mouse) fault, but it's a big problem for yours, and mine at least.

I might need to come up with a thing to force the batteries to not move..

I would try this first, as I tried it on mine, and it worked great.

Clean the contacts on the mouse itself, and the battery, with rubbing alcohol. Then put the batteries in. With them in, take a piece of paper towel folded over itself a couple times, but small enough to find between the batteries and the door, without causing the door to bend out of shape.

The mouse is almost heaven.

Intermittent operation: the tips of the batteries fit into a hole in the plastic battery compartment, and touch contacts. Some batteries (Costco Kirkland AA's) have short '+' tabs and wrap around plastic that interferes with the tip going through the holes. I scratch the plastic from the front end of the batteries and that helps them sit in deeper.

More intermittent operation: the Costco Kirkland batteries move a bit and that causes the tips again to slide around in the hole and ride up on the metal neck of the '+' tips, interfering with the plastic in the case and moving the battery back from the contact, so I put some padding behind the battery door to keep the batteries from moving around.

Now my son dropped the mouse and broke the battery door tab off, so I've taped the door shut -- just like on every cheap remote control we buy and wear out.

I have had this problem for several months...very early Apple sent me a new magic mouse for my IMac and it didn't make any difference. Because it is an intermittent problem the Apple folks can't find anything wrong with it -- have had it in the shop three times. Interesting that I am not the only one with this problem....(unfortunately, this isn't my only problem).

You know what would solve this problem... a usb version... for the mean time, its not worth it!!! I have done all this. Spent way to long it it, only to see "connection lost" time and time again. Forget it, Ill use my intellipoint microsoft mouse until there is a

USB OPTION PLEASE!

My mouse sits 6cm away from a USB port of the side of my WIRED keyboard that has NEVER disconnected, NEVER needs new batteries, NEVER gives up on you, NEVER makes you search your house for another one just so you can click connect again... I REALLY dont see the issue with having a cable version.

Sad to say, if the aluminium I put in is too small, it starts to slide in below the +ve tabs. Arghhhh, we need new battery holders. The tail spring pins are great. The +ve tip plates move. Arghhhh again.

I had this problem and two things happened that seemed to have fixed it -- knock on wood. The bluetooth was replaced AND I followed a suggestion here which indicated that the batteries were loose.....I stuck a small piece of paper towel into the case around the batteries which apparently kept them from rattling around. (Fortunately, I had my old keyboard around which would help me close it out when I had problems.) But I haven't had any problems since the paper towel fix (or maybe the bluetooth). The toweling will stay in there.

I had a problem with Magic Mouse dropping out today. Having read comments about cleaning the battery contacts, I took out the batteries to look at the contacts. I found a hair across one of the battery connections. I removed it and the problem seems to be solved, so I assume that this was the cause.

I have kept a tiny bit of paper towel in to keep the batteries steady but cannot keep the battery cover on....keeps popping off even though the toweling isn't above the batteries. Any ideas?

Two things come to mind. 1 - the spring on the black retaining clip is weak, and you need to push it forward to the retaining position (I've got that condition on an old Magic Mouse). 2 - the small tab under the door has bent or broken off - careful it will snap easily if you bend it (I've done that as well and my local non-Apple Mac dealer replaced the door on the mouse for some $20).

My magic mouse is 2 years old and has just started to die - after 10 seconds of connection it disconnects - if I click at it for another 10 seconds it will resurrect itself for another 10 seconds then repeats the problem. I've cleaned the contacts in the mouse, cleaned the battery ends and stuffed a piece of paper into the back in case the batteries are loose - all to no avail. Yes I did try a USB mouse [which I found useless when doing a lot of Photoshop work] and whilst that stays active it keeps jerking around the screen or sticking in one place like it has a mind of its own.

I think this is terminal - do Microsoft make one that works with a Mac? Sacrilege I know but I'm getting desperate.

I'm using OS 10.6.8 on a 27" Imac
