Mail going in different Sent folders

I have an AOL email address and when I send email from my iPhone, iPad, or iMac it goes in a Sent folder but it might be different Sent folders. Why does that happen?

I have a main Sent folder for all my email accounts on my devices and each AOL account (I have more than one but I am only asking about one) has a Sent folder and a Sent Items folder. Does anyone know the difference between a Sent folder and a Sent Items folder and how they each work?

Similar problem. Until a moment ago, I had one of the three IMAP email accounts on my iPad 2 set to put SENT messages in the sent folder "on my iPad". I have since fixed this account to put the sent messages folder on the server.

Here's my problem: I cannot find the "on my iPad" sent folder anywhere. This is a little silly. If an advanced option in settings shows this "on my iPad" sent folder, why doesn't it show up somewhere in the Mail app?

I came across both issues that Yankee and Adam faced on my boss's iPad 2 today.

On one of the email accounts, there was a "sent" folder and a "sent items" folder. The "sent" folder had some of the previous sent emails while there was only one email in the "sent items" folder. Why were two sent folders created and is there a way to consolidate them into one sent folder?

A few days ago, my boss's emails stopped saving into the/a sent folder. Under the settings for that account, "on my iPad" was chosen as the the sent folder. Like Adam, that issue was resolved when I designed a different sent folder (in the email account's advanced setting). I couldn't find the "on my iPad" sent folder on the iPad itself nor in the Mail app. Does this sent folder even exist? I think it's silly that the iPad would choose a nonexistent folder as the sent folder.
